Planning for your family session

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT TO HAPPEN AT OUR SESSION?

Come ready to have fun!  I like to to keep your session relaxed and natural and I try to keep the posing to a minimum. I will do everything I can to make your session comfortable as well as productive!

WHAT DO WE WEAR?
Trying to coordinate outfits for a family can be tough!  It’s best to keep it simple though and try not to overthink it. I recommend picking 3-4 complementary colors and carry them throughout your family’s outfits. Don’t forget to choose something that you and your family will feel good in! If you’re feeling good it will shine through in your photos!

Neutrals are always a win as they will allow the photos to be less “busy” and over crowded by too many colors. They’ll match the scenery instead of complicate it. For Mom, I always recommend a white or solid light colored dress (make it super flowy) or jeans and a flattering top. Think of adding a pop of color but steer away from black or very bright colors such as traditional colors like green orange and red. Think olive green, burnt orange, burgundy or mustard yellow instead!

Whether it’s a necklace, belt, bracelet, earrings, hat, or scarf, incorporating an accessory or two can bring great visual interest to your photos, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention when paired together. For example, if you go with bolder earnings, you might want to choose a more humble necklace, or maybe even no necklace at all.

DRESSING YOUR KIDDOS:
As you’re coordinating your outfit with your child(ren), keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” In fact, I recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow each personality to shine through.
If you have multiple children, don’t feel like you need to put them all in the same type of outfit. For example, if one of your daughters wears a dress, the other can wear a skirt or leggings, if that’s more of her style. If one of your sons wears a bowtie, the other can wear suspenders. Mixing up the wardrobe pieces will bring even more visual interest to the photos.

TIPS FOR SESSIONS WITH CHILDREN:
1. GET THEM EXCITED ABOUT THE SESSION IN ADVANCE.
Kids and adults alike want to know what is coming. An idea could be to plan a surprise, such as a trip to the ice cream shop or a night out at a favorite restaurant.
2. FEED THEM.
Full tummies (or at least not hungry tummies) make for happy kids. If you are planning a family dinner out afterwards, give your children a snack before dressing or pack some (non-messy) snacks for the road. Children are more likely to be restless and easily upset when they are hungry.
3. BRING ALONG THEIR FAVORITE TOY OR COMFORT.
If your child needs a break from pictures to snuggle up, it’s nice to have that comfort on hand. In fact, including that “snuggy” in some pictures speaks to what your family life is truly like at this time and someday you may look back on those pictures warmly remembering when your little one just couldn’t bear to be without that object.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY PHOTOS?

Check my Facebook page within 48 hours for a sneak peek!  If your purchased package includes a set number of images, then look for an email containing your own private proofing gallery. This will be sent within 2 weeks of your session date. Once your selections are made, I will artistically hand edit those images. When your gallery is complete you will be able to download your final images and print them as you wish! If you have purchased a deluxe package, then you will not receive a proofing email, but your entire edited gallery within 3-4 weeks of your session.

I am looking forward to our time together!  It’s going to be fun!
