Why hire a professional for newborn photos?

DSC_7599

You may be wondering, “Do I really need to hire a professional to do my newborn’s photoshoot? I can just take pictures of my new baby with my smart phone and they will come out great!” When deciding if hiring a professional to do your newborn shoot is the right choice for your growing family, there are a few things to consider.

  1. SAFETY:  You wouldn’t want to hand your sweet new baby over to just anyone, and you should never attempt to put your baby in harm’s way for a photo.  Professional Newborn photographers are familiar with exactly how to hold babies safely, when and how to pose babies, and more importantly, how not to pose your baby. We are trained to treat babies safely and respectfully. No photo is more important than the safety of a baby! If you have certain poses in mind ask your photographer before hand if they have done it before and if they know how to do it safely. Most professional photographers will take several photos and merge them into a composite to achieve certain poses.
  2. EQUIPMENT:  Professional photographers spend a lot of money on good equipment.  There is a reason why the camera and lenses cost what they do.  Can you take pictures with a standard point and shoot camera? Sure.  Would the pictures turn out as good? Probably not.  The expensive cameras are able to catch better light and have more megapixels.  This allows for more detail to be captured and overall better performance.
  3. POSING, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, & PROPS:  A professional photographer will pay close attention to the details. With newborn photography, babies are posed right down to the position of their hands and lips. Blankets are smoothed out. Fabrics are ironed. Background clutter is removed. The time of day and babies’ feeding schedule are taken into consideration. The temperature and ambiance of the room is carefully planned. Every part of the image and your session is carefully planned to ensure that you get the best images possible. There are certain variables that a professional photographer knows how to manipulate to help ensure an easier and more successful session. You also get to access a professional photographers prop collection (such as mine) and won’t have to worry about purchasing your own props.

  4. EDITING:  Photographers carefully re-touch your images. We use products like Photoshop and Lightroom to ensure that your images are properly exposed, the colors are perfect and the image is polished to a professional level. I always aim to get the best possible photo straight from my camera, but every image can be enhanced through editing, especially newborn photos. Lots of babies have red feet and hands or may have yellow skin from being jaundiced. Most babies have peeling and flaky skin, baby acne, or scratches from their nails. Some babies even have bruising as a result of a difficult delivery. A professional photographer will know exactly how to edit your images to get you wall-worthy images of your sweet little one.  I have spent thousands of dollars over the years on my equipment (including my retina display computers and editing softwares).

Lifestyle Newborn Session:
If you decide to go with my lifestyle session, I am able to direct you in choosing the best light in your home and am trained to make suggestions based on what is available.

Styled Newborn Session:
If choosing a styled session, you will have access to many of my safe newborn props, wraps, blankets, and outfits.  If you want to include some things of your own, you are welcome to do so too!

The first moments with your new little one are going to be gone in the blink of an eye, and you don’t want to miss an opportunity to have those priceless first moments captured forever. In a few weeks, your newest member of the family will look so different, and you will wish you had those memories.  If you have any questions about newborn photography, feel free to contact me at 612-440-3031 or kcalgarophotography@gmail.com

Baby B | Styled Newborn Session

It was so fun getting to snuggle this cutie for his newborn session and to see the love that this family of 5 shares.  Mom and dad might have their hands full with 3 kiddos under 4 years, but surely so are their hearts <3

Finn | Fresh 48 Session | Hastings, MN Newborn Photographer

There’s something about those hospital birthing rooms that bring such a warm fuzzy feeling when you enter them.  I could just feel the love that this family shared for this new little life and I am so happy that I was able to be a part of this special time in their lives.  Baby Finn was less than 12 hours old when I got to meet him and I must say, he was perfect in every way!  I think his big sisters thought so too because they had a little bit of a hard time sharing him during the photos.  Enjoy a few of my favorites from this wonderful Fresh 48 Newborn Session!

Why Book a Newborn Session in Advance

DSC_6226-EditBooking a photographer to capture baby’s newborn stage is on the to-do list for many expecting parents, but not all the parents think it needs to be done in advance, before they even deliver the baby. I often get last minute inquiries asking my availability for their newborn baby.  Sometimes it is too late to book a newborn session after your baby arrives because I am fully booked at that point. So why book a newborn photography session before your baby arrives?

This is something a lot of new parents ask: How can I even book a session when I don’t even know when the baby is going to arrive? My baby could arrive early or late.” This is of course very true. Unless you will have a scheduled c-section, you won’t know exactly when your baby will arrive.

Here is how my system works to make sure I photograph newborn babies in time for all my booked clients:  I take a certain number of due dates per month, with 2 maximum  due dates per week. I mark my clients’ due dates on my calendar and once the baby arrives, we will schedule a firm date for the session. I want to make sure all of my clients have the opportunity to get an appointment at the best possible time, which is within the first 2 weeks after birth.

I also want to be able to be flexible for my booked clients. Some clients might need a few more days due to delivery complications. Some babies might need a few more days before their first photo session due to jaundice, for example. I always prioritize my booked clients. Occasionally I will have openings and I will try my hardest to squeeze new clients in if I can.  If newborn photography is something that you really want for your family, then I recommend scheduling ahead just in case.

I currently only have one spot left for June, one for July and am fully booked for the month of August.  I am now booking for September and October – so if this is where your due date falls and you are interested in learning more about my in-home sessions, contact me today!

Abigail | Styled Newborn Session

I remember when I met this family a year ago; They were one of the many sweet clients that stuck out in my head.  Mom and big sister did a “Mommy & Me Mini Session” and we had such a wonderful time.  Fast forward to Christmas time and the family came back for minis again – this time with BIG news!  They were expecting!  I am so honored that I was able to do this sweet little girl’s newborn photos and to get to know the family a little better. It is one of the biggest joys of my profession; watching families grow and being a part of those memories.  Please enjoy a few of my favorite photos from Miss Abigail’s newborn session!

Nina’s Maternity Session

Maternity sessions are one of my favorites.  Not only do they give me a chance to get to know the parents before I do their newborn’s photos, but it’s also such a wonderful time to document.  Carrying a life is such a beautiful thing and being that I carried my own 4 children inside my body, this it is something that hits extra close to home for me.  It was such a fun night getting to know Nina + Trent and I wish them the best with their little boy Ethan when he arrives any day now! Enjoy a few of my favorites from this beautiful maternity session!

Miss A – Cake Smash

Another one of the tiny little newborns I was blessed to photograph is already a whole year old!  Time sure does fly!  It warms my heart knowing that I’ve captured these momentous milestones for Miss A’s family and that they will be able to look back and treasure these memories for years to come.  Enjoy a few of my favorites from this super sweet girl’s cake smash session!
