Preparing for your Fall Family Photos

Fall is officially upon us and that means you might be planning for a photo session in the near future!  Whether it’s with me or another photographer, you might have some questions about the day of your photos.  I have compiled a short list of FAQ as well as some tips so read on!

You should try to show up ready to have fun!  If you are unhappy or uncomfortable, it will show through in your photos, so try to be as relaxed as possible. I suggest doing whatever it takes to make that happen, whether it’s going for a massage or a pedicure that morning, going for a run, a nice meal, whatever you enjoy!

Trying to coordinate outfits for a family can be tough!  It’s best to keep it simple though and try not to overthink it.  I recommend picking 3-4 complementary colors and carry them throughout your family’s outfits. Don’t forget to choose something that you and your family will feel good in! If you’re feeling good it will shine through in your photos!

Kids and adults alike want to know what is coming. An idea could be to plan a surprise, such as a trip to the ice cream shop or a night out at a favorite restaurant.

Full tummies (or at least not hungry tummies) make for happy kids. If you are planning a family dinner out afterwards, give your children a snack before dressing or pack some (non-messy) snacks for the road. Children are more likely to be restless and easily upset when they are hungry.

If your child needs a break from pictures to snuggle up, it’s nice to have that comfort on hand. In fact, including that “snuggy” in some pictures speaks to what your family life is truly like at this time and someday you may look back on those pictures warmly remembering when your little one just couldn’t bear to be without that object.

  1. Plan outfits in advance
  2. Get plenty of rest.
  3. Make sure you eat.
  4. Don’t forget the props!
  5. Arrive Early.
  6. Have fun!
